Welcome to the October Knit-Along with the Mitered Drawstring Bag! This pattern is one of my older patterns, and I figured it was high time I dust it off and give it some love (as well as a minor pattern update, a few tutorial links had broken over time!)
The Mitered Drawstring Bag pattern is 50% off for the Knit-Along, right through the month of August. You can get the pattern in my Web Shop, Etsy, and Ravelry! And patrons have access to the pattern, you can download it in the Patreon Shop!

Inspiration for this Mitered Drawstring Project Bag came from the (now defunct) Designer’s Challenge forum on Ravelry. The challenge was to create a bag using mitered squares, and this was the result! I was looking for something durable, big enough to be a project bag for my knitting, and something that would use up those leftover skeins I had in my stash. This pattern uses about half-a-skein of the suggested yarn per colour, (a little more for the MC) making it the perfect project to use up leftover half-skeins of yarn!
The yarn used for the sample is Red Heart Eco-Cotton Blend, (which is now, sadly, discontinued), shown in the colourways "Chocolate" "Denim", "Snow," and "Moss" but any worsted or aran-weight cotton yarn should work up fine -- you could also work it in acrylic, or wool as well! If you’re looking for a similar yarn blend, any 'dishcloth cotton' style yarn, or a worsted-weight acrylic yarn would both work up well - I'd suggest something like *Universal Yarns Cotton Supreme.
The bag starts with the same cast on used for toe-up socks, and increases from that to form the bottom of the bag. There are two different bottoms, one for a bag with a tapered bottom, (shown on the sample), and one for a flat bottomed bag.
The mitered squares are knit individually without seaming, picking up stitches from the work below. Then, the bag is finished in the round and eyelets are added for a twisted cord. The top border of the bag is edged with garter stitch stripes.
There's no charts for this particular pattern, only written instructions, and, like all my pattern, there's a large-print version available that's also compatible with screen-reading technology.
Now, onto the other important part, the Knit-Along Details!
For the month of October, every finished bag has a chance to win a $30 CAD Gift Card from The Knitting Loft, or, 4 patterns of your choice from my Web Shop! And, don't worry, WIPs are very much accepted, so, if you've got a languishing WIP of this pattern, now's a great chance to finish it up (I know I personally need this sort of kick-in-the-butt sometimes!)
You can enter the KAL by posting on Facebook, Instagram, and, Discord (for a non-Meta option!) giving 3 chances to win in total!
I always look forward to seeing your Finished Objects! Please post them to various social media with #SarahDawnsDesignsOct2026 and tag me at @SarahDawnsDesigns (this one's new since IG doesn't always show me the hashtags any more!) and/or share them to the Facebook Group or to the Discord! That way, I can see the awesome that you make!
Good Luck, and happy knitting!
